On-campus connections
Ethernet in campus housing (IUB and IUPUI)
To connect to the Internet via Ethernet (a cabled connection) in campus housing, you will need a Network ID. Your computer must have an Ethernet card (also called a network interface card, or NIC), and you must have an Ethernet cable. The Get Connected utility will help you configure your Windows computer for connecting to the IU network. For help, see Get Connected to IU's network and Networking in campus housing
-
IUPUI: In Ball Residence Hall and the Campus
Apartments on the Riverwalk, you may use a commercial
Ethernet cable.
-
Indiana University Bloomington: In Briscoe, Union
Street Center, and the Tulip Tree apartments, you will need to provide
your own standard cat6 Ethernet straight-through patch cord. In all
other non-Greek campus housing, you will find an Ethernet crossover
cable attached to the wall data jack.
IUB Greek housing residents may purchase an IU proprietary Ethernet cable; see Getting an Ethernet cable for use in IUB offices, campus housing, Greek houses, and other IU-affiliated buildings
Ethernet in campus offices
To set up a computer in your office on campus, contact your department's local support provider (LSP). The data jack needs to be activated and an IP address assigned. If you aren't sure who your department's LSP is, contact your campus Support Center.
Wireless on campus
If your computer has a wireless network card, you can make a wireless connection to the IU network at most locations on IU campuses; see About wireless connections.
For visitors to IU
If you are not affiliated with IU but are visiting campus, you can use AT&T wireless. See How can IU visitors connect to AT&T wireless?
Off-campus connections
Note: Indiana University and Purdue University allow researchers and visitors wireless access to their own networks from each campus. For details, see Wireless access at Indiana University and Purdue University.
DSL, cable modem, or dial-up connections (outside ISPs)
For help setting up DSL, cable modem, or dial-up modem service, contact an Internet service provider (ISP) in your area; see Finding an Internet service provider. Your ISP will give you instructions to configure your computer.
Dial-up connections (IUB and IUPUI)
For information about making a dial-up connection at IUB or IUPUI, and links to instructions for configuring your computer, see About the IUB and IUPUI modem pools.
