About duplex printing in the IUB and IUPUI STCs

To reduce paper use and to minimize solid waste, duplex printing (i.e., two-sided output) in black and white is available in all UITS Student Technology Centers (STCs) at IUB and IUPUI, and in all Residential Technology Centers (RTCs) at IUB.

Unlike single-sided (simplex) printing, you must select duplex printing each time you print. Printing in duplex has no effect on how pages are counted against your printing allotment, which counts letter-sized (8.5"x11") page images, not sheets of paper. Some software applications (e.g., browsers) will automatically add an additional blank page to documents with an odd number of pages to keep unrelated print jobs from running together. The blank page will count against your printing allotment when you print in duplex. If you want to reduce the cost to your printing allotment, consider printing multiple page images on one side of each sheet of paper instead.

Note: To avoid unexpected charges on your bursar bill, check your IUB printing allotment or IUPUI printing allocation regularly.

Duplex color printing

Color printers are available in a number of STC and RTC locations at IUB; all are duplex-capable. For more, see Color printing and graphics printers and plotters in the IUB STCs and RTCs

Duplex printing in a Windows STC

Because each Windows application handles printing a little differently, the appearance of the print window will vary by application. In some cases, there are multiple ways to select the same feature. For instance, in Internet Explorer:

  1. If the menu bar is visible, select File, and then Print...; if the menu bar is hidden, select Print... from the drop-down menu next to the Printer icon.

  2. Select Preferences.

  3. Select the Finishing tab. If the printer is capable of duplex printing, you will see a box marked Print on Both Sides (Duplex).

  4. Select the appropriate orientation for your duplex output, click OK, and then click Print.

In other applications, such as Microsoft Word or Excel:

  1. Select the File tab, and then select Print...

  2. Select Printer Properties.

  3. Select the Finishing tab. If duplex printing is available, you will see a box marked Print on Both Sides (Duplex).

  4. Select the appropriate orientation for your duplex output. Click OK to close the window, and then click OK again to send the output to print.

Remember that, depending upon your printer or application configuration, there may be other, more direct ways of using duplex.

Duplex printing in a Mac STC

  1. To print in duplex on the default printer, select File, and then Print....

  2. Change the pull-down menu from General to Layout. Select Print on Both Sides, and then click Print.
