Dialing into the IUB and IUPUI modem pools in Windows XP and Vista
This document explains how to manually set up a PPP connection in Windows XP or Vista at Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI. UITS recommends that you set up a PPP connection to IU for Windows XP by using the PPP Wizard or Connect to IU software, available from IUware at:
http://iuware.iu.edu/Note: This software automatically does what the instructions in this document describe how to do manually.
Windows Vista
To configure your computer to dial into IUB or IUPUI, follow these steps:
- Click the
Startmenu, and then selectConnect To.
- Near the bottom of the
Network Connectionswindow, selectSet up a connection or network.
- Choose
Set up a dial-up connection, and then clickNext.
- Type the phone number (at IUB,
856-5200; at IUPUI,278-5620).
- Type your username and password, and then give the connection a
name.
- Click
Connect. If your computer is not currently plugged into a phone jack, the connection will fail, but you can clickSet up the connection anywayto save the connection for future use.
To access the dial-up connection, follow these steps:
- Click the
Startmenu, and then selectConnect To.
- Select your dial-up connection from the list, and then
click
Connect.
- To add an alternate number, right-click the dial-up connection
from the list, and then choose
Properties. Click theAlternatesbutton, and then add the correct phone number (at IUB,856-5202). ClickOK.
- In the
Alternate Phone Numberswindow, make sure there is a check in the box next toIf number fails, try next number. Because the alternate lines have fewer modems, leaveMove successful numbers to top of listunchecked. ClickOK.
Windows XP
To manually configure your Windows XP computer to dial into IUB or IUPUI, follow the steps below to create and then configure your connection settings.
To create a connection, follow these steps:
- If you are using the Classic
Startmenu, clickStartand selectSettings, thenNetwork Connections.If you are using the default
Startmenu, clickStart, and thenControl Panel. Double-clickNetwork and Internet Connections. - Under "Network Tasks" on the left, click
Create a new connection. When the New Connection Wizard appears, clickNext.
- Click
Create a connection to the network at your workplace, and then clickNext.
- Choose
Dial-up Connection, and then clickNext.
- Type a name for the connection (e.g.,
IUBorIUPUI), and then clickNext.
- Type the phone number (at IUB,
856-5200; at IUPUI,278-5620), and then clickNext.
- Choose the option
My use only, and then clickNext.
- Check
Add shortcut to this connection to My Desktop. ClickFinish.
To configure the connection you just created, follow these steps:
- If you are using the Classic
Startmenu, clickStartand selectSettings, thenControl Panel. Double-clickInternet Options.If you are using the default
Startmenu, clickStart, and thenControl Panel. Double-clickNetwork and Internet Connections. ClickSet up or change your Internet connection. - Click the
Connectionstab. Click the name of your connection (e.g.,IUBorIUPUI), and then clickSettings....
- Under "Dial-up Settings", you can save your Network ID
username, password, and domain to avoid having to re-enter them.
- To add a second dial-up phone number to the connection, follow the
steps below:
- Click
Properties, and then clickAlternates. - Click
Add, and then type the number (at IUB,856-5202). ClickOK. - In the
Alternate Phone Numberswindow, make sure that there is a check in the box next toIf number fails, try next number. Since the alternate lines have fewer modems, leaveAdd successful number to top of listunchecked. ClickOK.
- Click
- Click the
Networkingtab and make sure that onlyTCP/IPandClient for Microsoft Networkingare checked. No other protocols will work.
- Click
OKthree times, and then close theNetwork and Internet Connectioncontrol panel.
- To make a connection, double-click the icon on your desktop, and then
click
Dial.
