Editing the Address Book on a BlackBerry

The easiest way to manage your BlackBerry Address Book is to edit your Outlook Contacts and then synchronize your handheld (see For mobile devices, what is synchronization?).

However, you can use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to edit your Address Book directly, if you wish. Your changes will propagate to your Outlook Contacts the next time you sync.

To edit your BlackBerry Address Book using Desktop Manager:

  1. Turn off wireless address book synchronization, if necessary, by following the steps below:

    1. On the BlackBerry handheld, open the Address Book screen and click the trackwheel.
    2. From the menu, choose Options, and then select Wireless Synchronization.
    3. Click the trackwheel and choose Change Option. Use the trackwheel to change the selected option from Yes to No.
  2. Cradle your device. If you have a password enabled, enter it so your device will connect to the desktop.

  3. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager and double-click the Backup and Restore icon. The Backup and Restore dialog box will open.

  4. Click Advanced.... In the Backup/Restore dialog box, from the "Handheld Databases" field on the right, select Address Book, and then click the left arrow button to copy it to the "Desktop File Databases" field on the left.

  5. To open the Address Book for editing on your computer, double-click it in the "Desktop File Databases" field on the left.

  6. The Editing Address Book dialog box will open; here you can create, edit, and delete entries, or import from your Outlook Address Book or other personal information manager. Click Close when you are finished.

  7. The changes you make affect only the version of your Address Book on your desktop until you transfer it to your BlackBerry, either by clicking the right arrow, or by restoring it as part of a full restore; see With a BlackBerry, how do I back up and restore data?
