Email at IU: Accounts and clients
There are two aspects to email service at Indiana University:
- Your email account, which exists on a server
- Your email client, the software with which you read your mail, which can be a browser-based application (e.g., IU Webmail) or a program that you configure on your own computer (e.g., Outlook Express)
How you read your mail depends on which client you use and what kind of account or accounts you have.
Not all clients work with all types of accounts. For example, IU Webmail will work with Cyrus mail accounts, but not with Exchange accounts; the web client for Exchange and Imail accounts is Outlook Web Access (OWA).
Accounts
New students create email accounts on the Imail or Umail systems when they create their first accounts; current students can use the Account Management System (AMS) to create Imail or Umail accounts. Access is via the web, but both systems allow IMAP connections via supported email clients.
Many faculty and staff at the campuses hosted by UITS systems, have Cyrus mail accounts. Graduate students, student employees, faculty, and staff may have Exchange accounts additionally or instead.
To see what accounts you have or are eligible for, visit the AMS. The kind of email account or accounts you have will determine which clients you can or should use to read your email.
Clients
As mentioned above, not all clients are compatible with all kinds of accounts. The table below shows which clients can be used with which type of account. Click the link for a client or class of clients for configuration instructions:
