Placing a call on hold

At Indiana University, the hold feature of your office telephone service may function differently depending upon your campus or telephone model.

On this page:

IU Bloomington

At IU Bloomington, the hold function allows you to keep a telephone call on the line while you step away from the phone or answer another call (two-line phones only). To place a call on hold from your office telephone:

  1. Make or answer a call.

  2. Press your telephone's Hold button. In some cases, the display shows that the call is on hold (when a display is available). In other cases a hold indicator light flashes to inform you that a call is on hold.

  3. To retrieve the call, lift the handset or press your telephone's Speakerphone or Handsfree button (for a hands-free call).

IUPUI single-line telephones

To place a call on hold on a single-line telephone at IUPUI:

  1. Make or answer a call, then press the Link/Flash key.

  2. Listen for the special feature dial tone, then dial *76.

  3. Listen for the confirmation tone. Do not hang up.

  4. To return to your call, press the Link/Flash key, then dial *76.

Meridian 8314 and Caller ID telephones

  • On the Meridian 8314, you cannot access any special features when a call is placed on hold.

  • When the call you have put on hold is picked up at another extension, the call remains connected to your telephone and is taken off hold. If you do not hang up the handset, this means any background noise from your area will be heard by the caller and the other extension.

  • If an incoming call is placed on hold and it is not retrieved at the same or another extension within 15 minutes, the telephone will drop the held call and re-establish a dial tone.
