Burning a data CD or DVD in the STCs using Nero

Note: Federal and state laws prohibit the illegal duplication of copyrighted materials. UITS will not support the use of duplicated CDs or any other technology for copyright infringement. For more, see Copyright infringement in Student Technology Centers.

At Indiana University, Nero is available on any Windows Student Technology Center (STC) workstation with a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive. To find out which STCs have CD-RW or DVD-RW drives, see Removable media devices in the IUB STCs and Removable media devices in the IUPUI STCs

To burn data onto a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, or DVD-RW using Nero, UITS recommends that you begin by saving your files to your desktop. This will eliminate the risk of network errors or latency causing data corruption while Nero is writing the files to your CD.

Once you've saved your files to the desktop, insert a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, or DVD-RW in your computer's CD-RW or DVD-RW drive, and then:

  1. To start Nero, click Start, then All Programs, then Multimedia, and then Nero.

  2. In the New Compilation dialog box, for a CD, select CD-ROM (ISO), and then click New.

For a DVD, from the drop-down menu, select DVD. Then, select DVD-ROM (ISO), and then click New.

Nero's compilation window should now be open. On the right, you'll see the File Browser, which shows the directories and files on your workstation. On the left, you'll see a window that displays the CD or DVD name and the files contained on the CD or DVD.

  3. By default, the CD or DVD you're working on will be called "New". To rename it, click the name (next to the CD or DVD icon) and type a new one.

  4. In the File Browser window, navigate to the files you want to burn and drag them to the window on the left. If they are on the desktop, you can drag them from there.

  5. Once the left window is populated with the files you want to burn to the CD or DVD, click Burn.

The Burn Compilation dialog box will appear and the burning process will begin. It may take several minutes to complete, depending upon how much data you're transferring to your CD or DVD.

Afterward, your workstation's CD or DVD tray should open. To be safe, reinsert the CD or DVD and check that the files were burned successfully.
