What happens to your student computing accounts when you leave IU, graduate, transfer to another campus, or study abroad?

Note: For information about termination of former employee computing accounts, see UITS policy on computing account termination

Leaving IU

At Indiana University, your student computing accounts remain active as long as you are enrolled at any IU campus. After two consecutive terms (fall, spring, and summer are each considered one term) during which you are not enrolled through the IU registrar, UITS will disable your accounts.

When your accounts are disabled, you will be unable to access them, although UITS temporarily retains their associated files, including email messages. You will still be able to access OneStart and Student Center features such as your bursar bill, unofficial transcripts, and financial aid; see Former student access to bills, transcripts, and other university information

For information about re-enabling your accounts, see As an IU student, can I have my disabled accounts re-enabled? Alternatively, you may request a temporary extension; see Requesting a temporary extension for disabled accounts

If you do not register for classes the following semester, UITS will delete your computing accounts and all associated files.

Note: Your Imail or Umail account will not be disabled or deleted, and you can keep it after you leave IU. See For Imail and Umail, what do I need to know when I leave IU?

For more about student account lifecycles, see At IU, when do students get their computing accounts, and how long do they have them?

For more about keeping your IU email account, see Retaining an IU-sponsored email account after graduation

Transferring to another IU campus

If you have been a student at one IU campus and transfer to another one:

Studying abroad or off campus

IU students who arrange to study abroad through the Office of Overseas Study do not need to do anything to maintain their IU computing accounts.

If you have made other arrangements to study abroad or off campus for more than two consecutive semesters, a full-time faculty or staff sponsor must complete the Affiliate form using the Account Management Service (AMS); see Sponsored computing accounts for IU affiliates.
