Ongoing projects

UITS and the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology (OVPIT) are currently working on the following projects to improve systems and services offered to IU students, faculty, and staff. • Central American and Mexican Video Archive (CAMVA)
  Create a digital archive to preserve and make accessible video and film from Mexican and Central American collections
  
  
• Centralized SharePoint environment
  Bring a centralized and university-wide Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 environment to Indiana University
  
  
• The Chymistry of Isaac Newton
  Produce a scholarly online edition of Isaac Newton's writings on alchemy
  
  
• COMPASS Scholarship Selection and Awarding Process
  Implement COMPASS system for processing scholarship applications on all IU campuses
  
  
• Data Capacitor
  Create a large capacity, short-term data store with very fast I/O, and a service for publishing data via the web
  
  
• Data Center relocation
  Plan for transition to new Data Center
  
  
• Electronic Procurement and Invoicing Center (EPIC)
  Enterprise application providing the functionality necessary for requesting, procuring, and paying for materials and services used throughout the university
  
  
• 23 x 7 Enterprise Data Warehouse
  Increase online hours for the Enterprise Data Warehouse (DSS1PRD) to 23 x 7
  
  
• Enterprise Oracle Linux migration
  Virtualize and standardize the enterprise database infrastructure, leveraging core Enterprise Infrastructure system management strengths and hardware
  
  
• Enterprise shopping cart
  Selection and implementation of an off-the-shelf enterprise shopping cart application for IU schools and departments
  
  
• ePortfolio
  As part of the Sakai project, further customization of ePortfolio
  
  
• Event notification system
  Implement a web-based, externally hosted event notification service
  
  
• EVIA Digital Archive: Ethnomusicological video for instruction and analysis
  Establish a digital archive of ethnomusicological video for use by scholars and instructors
  
  
• Faculty annual reporting
  Develop an application that will automate the annual faculty summary reporting process
  
  
• HathiTrust (Shared Digital Repository)
  Partner with University of Michigan and participating libraries of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) to deliver persistent, high-availability storage for digitized book and journal content
  
  
• HRMS/SIS PeopleSoft application releases
  Provide a strategy and schedule for applying updates to IU's implementation of PeopleSoft
  
  
• HUBzero Consortium
  Develop and deploy virtual organization research web portals based on the HUB technologies developed at Purdue University
  
  
• Indiana CTSI portal development
  Develop a portal for the Indiana Clinical and Translational Science Institute
  
  
• Indiana METACyt Initiative
  Manage the Center for Computational Cytomics as part of an initiative to advance life sciences research at IU Bloomington and in the state of Indiana
  
  
• The Informatics Core for the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders
  Facilitate data sharing through the creation of standards for data integration and the development and deployment of software tools for data entry, centralization, and analysis
  
  
• Internet Protocol Television (IPTV)
  Transition television services on the IUPUI campus from an analog/coaxial cable system to an Internet Protocol TV system
  
  
• IU alumni Dell discount
  Alumni will receive discounts on Dell purchases; IU credited for such purchases
  
  
• IU BCPT (Business Continuity Planning Tool)
  Development of an open source business continuity planning tool
  
  
• IU certificate authority (IUCA)
  Provides SSL/TLS server certificates (certs) for production use at IU for a reduced cost, and certs for testing, staging, and development at no cost to IU employees and affiliates
  
  
• IU Knowledge Base v. 5
  Replace the IU Knowledge Base with an updated system that better meets the needs of students, faculty, and staff of IU, as well as external partners
  
  
• IU Knowledge Base Wiki
  Wiki interface to content imported from the IU Knowledge Base

  Web portal service for mobile devices
  
  
• Kuali Coeus (KC)
  Open-source, richly featured enterprise research administration system for use by all types of higher education institutions conducting research
  
  
• Kuali Financial System
  Open source, richly featured enterprise financial system for all types of higher education institutions
  
  
• Lifetime Constituent Communications/Talisma CRM Licensing Agreement
  Enterprise license agreement between IU and Campus Management to provide constituent relationship management functionality
  
  
• lynda.com pilot
  Offer lynda.com services free of charge to IU students, faculty, and staff
  
  
• Multicore computing
  Research multicore CPUs (many independent microprocessors on a single board)
  
  
• National Gene Vector Biorepository and Coordinating Center (NGVB)
  Help university scientists share research information and substances to promote discoveries, patient safety, and compliance with regulations of the Food and Drug Administration
  
  
• Network master plan
  Develop a comprehensive technical and financial plan for IUB and IUPUI communications infrastructure
  
  
• New Technologies, New Pedagogies: Learning Spaces in the 21st Century
  Develop proposals to combine pedagogy, information technology, and physical and virtual space to enhance teaching and learning
  
  
• Oncourse
  Continue to upgrade the Oncourse environment to provide new functionality to improve the teaching and learning experience
  
  
• Open Science Grid operations
  Provide an operations center for the Open Science Grid, monitoring grid status, tracking problems, and supporting grid users
  
  
• Open.iu.edu
  Provide a gateway into open content across IU, including open courseware, journals, collections, and podcasts
  
  
• Podcasting initiatives
  Develop podcast services for IU
  
  
• Polar Grid: Cyberinfrastructure for Polar Science
  Create cyberinfrastructure for gathering and analyzing data from the polar ice sheets
  
  
• Pre-Disbursement Processor system (PDP)
  A web-based application that processes payment files from various systems throughout the university to prepare those payments for final disbursement processing
  
  
• Service desk implementation
  Identify and obtain a suitable new incident management system, develop strategies for migration to that system, and implement the replacement
  
  
• Student Awareness Group/New Student Orientation Group
  Increase awareness and usage of UITS and related information technology services, tools, resources, and support
  
  
• Student eDocs
  Create a series of electronic documents that interface with student, administrative, and faculty processes to facilitate moving forms through the system
  
  
• TeraGrid resource partner
  Contribute supercomputing resources to the TeraGrid in support of scientific research
  
  
• Travel Management System
  Enterprise-wide travel system to replace the TAPS system and allow for automation of travel approvals and reimbursement requests
  
  
• Twitter@IU
  Provides a searchable directory of IU-related Twitter feeds, presented in categories to allow easy searching
  
  
• UITS Advanced IT Core
  Research Technologies support for IU School of Medicine projects that depend heavily on computation, data management, visualization, and novel IT solutions
  
  
• Videoconferencing Refinements and Expansion
  Refine the videoconferencing experience at IU by emphasizing high-definition upgrades to legacy standard definition rooms, and define standards and best practices that encourage greater use of synchronous video communication in the classroom, conference room, and at the desktop
  
  
• Web content management system
  Find an appropriate web content management system (CMS) product and implement a web CMS pilot

  Consolidation of Kerberos implementations into a single service based on Active Directory

• STC Evolution pilot project
  Explore enhancements to the current STC experience, including accessibility, ubiquitous access to applications, and awareness of future student expectations

• VPN service enhancement
  Because of the important role of virtual private networks (VPNs) in providing secure remote access to protected resources, IU will replace the outdated PPTP VPN service in favor of an SSL VPN solution. In addition, the role of IPSec/L2TP based VPNs as a service will be minimized.

• Website services and MySQL infrastructure upgrade
  Rebuild the IU Website and MySQL Database Services infrastructure on new hardware in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux environment that includes a load balancer in front to the web server. This is a replacement for the web services delivered via Veritas and Champion, the Analog Log Service, and the MySQL database service delivered via Triton and Callisto.
