Making an IPsec VPN connection to the IU network on an iPhone
Note: Apple uses the term iPhone to refer to the software and configuration of both the iPhone and iPod touch. This document uses iPhone to describe both devices.
At Indiana University Bloomington, IUPUI, and IU East, UITS strongly recommends you use the IU Secure wireless network, which does not require VPN. For instructions, see Connecting to IU Secure with an iPhone or iPod touch
At other IU campuses, to access web sites and services through the IU Wireless SSID, use a VPN connection; see The basics of VPN at IU. Unencrypted access to some IU web sites is available without the use of VPN, but UITS strongly recommends VPN for added security and full access to IU resources.
Configuring IPsec-based VPN
To enable IPsec-based VPN access for the iPhone:
- From the main screen, tap
Settings> General> Network> VPN> Add VPN Configuration.
- Select

- Tap

Once you have configured an IPsec VPN connection as described above,
you can switch VPN to On in Settings. This is
possible only if you have updated your iPhone to version 1.0.1 or
later.
Note: Many services at IU do not support iPhone firmware versions older than 2.1. UITS strongly recommends all users upgrade to the latest firmware available from Apple; for instructions, see iPhone 2 software
