Description: Action 21 represents IU's first comprehensive, multi-classroom technology plan for general purpose classrooms, scheduled by the Office of the Registrar. The five-year plan, finalized in May 2000, called for installation and support of technology in classrooms, and coordination of the design and renovation of classrooms to enable use of that technology. The plan called for more installed technology and less reliance on mobile equipment. IU Classroom Types were revised in 2005 from Type I, II, III, IV, V, and VI to Basic, Enhanced, Advanced, Computer, and VIC, as follows:

Basic: Analog display capability, overhead
transparency projector and generally a TV/VCR/DVD, wired/wireless
network access

Enhanced: Analog/digital display capability,
overhead transparency projector, video/data projector or flat panel,
laptop connection, external A/V interface, computer (optional),
VCR/DVD (optional), wired/wireless network access

Advanced: Analog/digital display capability,
overhead transparency projector, video/data projector(s) or flat
panel(s), computer(s), VCR/DVD, laptop connection, external A/V
interface, document camera or other special equipment (e.g., video
cameras, recording capability), interactive pen tablets,
wired/wireless network access

Computer: Installed computer at each student
station; teacher station may have Enhanced or Advanced technology
package installed
- VIC: Standard Virtual Indiana Classroom (VIC) package for distance learning
IU has significantly increased the number of Enhanced and Advanced technology classrooms on all campuses since the implementation of the IT Strategic Plan.
Outcome: Instructors have ready access to an installed standardized technology package in classrooms. Standardization of installations on each campus increases faculty familiarity with technology use. Established life cycle replacement schedules have increased the equipment's reliability and decreased the number of emergency calls for equipment problems. The number of requests for mobile equipment deliveries has decreased dramatically on all campuses.
