At IU, how do I make a VPN connection with my Android device?

Note: Although these instructions are accurate, UITS recommends that you instead follow the steps in At IU, how do I configure SSL VPN with the Junos Pulse application on my Android device? The setup is much easier.

At Indiana University Bloomington, IUPUI, and IU East, UITS strongly recommends you use the IU Secure wireless network, which does not require VPN. For instructions, see IU Secure wireless connections: Android OS.

At other IU campuses, to access web sites and services through the IU Wireless SSID, use a VPN connection; see VPN at IU. Unencrypted access to some IU web sites is available without the use of VPN, but UITS strongly recommends VPN for added security and full access to IU resources.

To set up a VPN connection to the IU network using Android:

  1. From the Home screen, press Menu.

  2. Tap Settings, and then Wireless & Networks.

  3. Tap VPN Settings, and then Add VPN.

  4. Select Add L2TP/IPSec PSK VPN.

  5. Tap VPN name. In the field, enter IU VPN. Tap Ok.

  6. Tap Set VPN server and, in the field, enter the appropriate server address.

See below to find your VPN server for both remote (e.g., cable modem, DSL, or outside Internet service provider) and wireless VPN connections:

    • IU Bloomington: ipsec.indiana.edu
    • IUPUI: ipsec.iupui.edu
    • IU East: vpn.iue.edu
    • IU Kokomo: vpn.iu.edu
    • IU Northwest: 149.162.8.2
    • IU South Bend: vpn.iu.edu
    • IU Southeast: vpn.ius.edu

    Tap Ok.

  7. Tap Set IPSec pre-shared key and then, in the field provided, enter hermanbwells. Tap Ok.

  8. Tap Menu, and then tap Save.

  9. Under your VPN list, tap IU VPN. In the "User Name:" and "Password:" fields, enter your Network ID credentials. If you want the connection to remember your username, check Remember username.

  10. Tap Connect.

Note: You may be prompted to enter a password to "enable credential storage". This is an Android feature that secures saved passwords on the device. If you agree to this, you will be creating a new password; the device is not asking for a pre-existing password.
