Through the Unizin consortium, IU joins like-minded universities seeking to provide faculty and students with the best tools and services available for both residential and online learning.
Why Unizin?
Students and faculty want tools for increased collaboration, use of rich media, better mobile experiences, visual‑ and media‑based discussions, real‑time classroom annotation, and more.
To influence this digital learning landscape, Unizin’s focus is on content, learning environment platforms, and analytics. By providing a common infrastructure based on open standards, Unizin tools and services help universities engage, educate, and inspire all students.
The history
In June 2014, Indiana University announced a partnership with Colorado State, the University of Florida and the University of Michigan to form Unizin. The list of founding members has grown to 11, which also includes The Ohio State University, The University of Iowa, Pennsylvania State University, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, Oregon State University, and University of Nebraska.
Unizin milestones
- As part of its launch, Unizin selected Canvas by Instructure to provide a common learning management system for use by member institutions.
- In the spring of 2015, Unizin created the Teaching and Learning Advisory Group, comprised of 40+ participants across all 11 institutions. The group is charged to collaborate across institutions, to gather feedback from faculty and students, and to provide advice to Unizin staff and recommendations to the Unizin Board.
- In the summer of 2015, Unizin announced the acquisition of the Courseload Engage etext reader platform. Indiana University faculty and students have been using Engage since 2011 as part of our eTexts initiative.
- Currently initiatives are underway regarding digital publishing via Pressbooks, content curation and sharing, and learning analytics via BNED LoudSight, Unizin's Course Monitor and Unizin’s Data Platform.
