All IU constituents with email have a single inbox, username@iu.edu, and campus-specific email addresses forward to it. Unifying email to a single domain simply means that you will have one address, username@iu.edu, to send and receive email.
Unifying email
One Mail FAQ
The most frequently asked questions about the One Mail Initiative.
The One Mail Initiative is a two-year effort to unify all Indiana University email addresses under the iu.edu email domain. This will better protect IU faculty, staff, and students from cybersecurity threats and better leverage the IU brand.
All IU constituents with email have a single inbox that is attached to your username@iu.edu. If you currently have a campus-specific email address (e.g., username@indiana.edu, username@iupui.edu, etc.) your mail is currently forwarding to your iu.edu inbox. Unifying email to a single domain simply means that you will only have one address, username@iu.edu, where you can send and receive mail.
There are three main reasons for email consolidation: cybersecurity, better stewardship of university resources, and unifying the IU brand.
The primary method bad actors use to gain access to IU systems is through successful email phishing attempts. Indiana University currently has more than 250,000 valid email addresses and receives more than 500 million spam / bad actor messages each year. Reducing the number of email addresses to a single iu.edu email domain, in addition to adding enhanced security options, radically improves our security.
Unifying around a single email domain simplifies our technical infrastructure and reduces maintenance costs.
Finally, the IU brand is known worldwide. This Initiative seeks to enhance the brand by using it consistently across all IU campuses.
Any mail sent to your current campus-based email address is safe and will remain in your inbox.
January 1, 2026: Any mail sent to your current campus-based email address will no longer be delivered. UITS will set an auto-reply to messages sent to your campus-based email address. This message will tell senders that IU no longer supports that campus-based email address and that emails should be addressed to your iu.edu account.
Email is the primary way in which bad actors gain access to IU systems and data. These bad actors obtain passwords through phishing emails. Indiana University currently supports 10 email domains and more than 400,000 email addresses that received 1.3 billion messages last year (2023). More than 500 million of those messages were spam and/or malware. While we do our best to stop these messages from making it to your inbox, we had more than 3,000 accounts compromised last year (2023) largely due to phishing attacks. With the completion of the One Mail Initiative, we will reduce the number of email addresses by 200,000 eliminating more than 100 million spam and/or malware messages.
The reason for making this move now lies, in part, with the creation of IU Indianapolis. The split of IUPUI into IU Indianapolis and Purdue University Indianapolis necessitated IU Indianapolis faculty, staff, and students to move away from the iupui.edu email domain.
Additionally, this aligns with IU’s Digital Strategy Initiative, which launched last year consolidating more than 2,000 web pages under a single iu.edu web domain to improve search engine optimization and user navigation. Unifying under a single domain of iu.edu aligns with our web and digital strategy and builds on the IU brand.

Anyone with a campus-specific email address (indiana.edu, iupui.edu, iuk.edu, iupuc.edu, ius.edu, iun.edu, iusb.edu, iue.edu, iufw.edu) will be affected. Since 2016, the default email address created for new faculty, staff, and students has been username@iu.edu. However, an automated process created a campus-specific email address based on the primary campus of the account creator. Therefore, you may be receiving email at a campus-specific email address and not realize it. You can see what email addresses are active for you and set iu.edu as your primary email at https://access.iu.edu/Email.
Based on community feedback, UITS has extended by one year the timeframe for the discontinuation of the iupui.edu and iupuc.edu domains. They will now be discontinued on December 31, 2025.
Individuals with a campus-based email address of iupui.edu, iupuc.edu, indiana.edu, iuk.edu, ius.edu, iun.edu, iusb.edu, iue.edu, iufw.edu will continue to receive email on these domains until December 31, 2025.
January 1, 2026: UITS will set an auto-reply to messages sent to your campus-based email address. This message will tell senders that IU no longer supports that campus-based email address and that emails should be addressed to your iu.edu account.
You may choose to remove your campus domain address yourself at https://access.iu.edu/Email. If you do not remove it yourself, it will be removed administratively according to the established timeline.
While technologies exist to forward emails from campus-specific domains to your iu.edu email address, doing so fails to accomplish the goals to reduce our security risks, maximize brand identity, and reduce complexity as it requires maintaining the campus-specific domains to provide the forwarding service.
Yes. Additional information will be provided to those who own group accounts as there are potential issues with account name collisions when moving group accounts to a single email domain. Look for additional FAQs and direct communication to those affected soon.
If you have additional questions, please send an email to onemail@iu.edu. If you need technical assistance, please contact your local UITS support person or your campus support center.

Next steps and potential impact
To avoid missing email, follow the instructions in the Knowledge Base document Prepare for One Mail at IU.
You can see your active email addresses at https://access.iu.edu/Email.
If your primary email address is not set to your @iu.edu email address, change it at https://access.iu.edu/Email/UpdatePrimary/. With this change, your sent emails will come from your iu.edu address and your address in the global address book will be changed to your iu.edu address. For more information, see Change your primary email address and set delivery for your email addresses.
To monitor email coming to your campus email address, create an email folder named “Campus Domain Emails” and a rule that copies any emails sent to your campus email address to this new folder for review. Monitor this folder periodically to determine if you want to notify senders that your email address is changing to iu.edu. Instructions on creating the folder and rule can be found at Create a rule to collect email sent to a campus-specific address.
Your local UITS support person is available to assist you with any issues or questions you might have. Additionally, feel free to reach out to your campus Support Center.
You can take several steps to ensure you don’t miss emails. See Update your contact information for published research.

Services such as Netflix, cable service, utility companies, online banking, social media etc. typically use email addresses in one or two ways. If the service allows you to change your service ID, change this to your personal email address.
